The Big Island Table Tennis Association (BITTA) established a relationship with the Boys and Girls Club of Hilo in 2009. It has always been an important part of the BITTA mission to coach children, so the meeting was opportune for both organizations. Together we have created ongoing coaching programs for junior table tennis players, supported the Boys and Girls Club in volunteer events, and in cooperation with Len Winkler of Table Tennis and More, have hosted statewide table tennis tournaments, drawing topflight players from around the state and across the nation. Our club is very grateful to the people of the Boys & Girls Club for providing us with regular access to their facilities.
The aim of our kids programs is to provide a fun time to children of our host, BGCBI, and support their enjoyment of ping-pong. We offer programs every Tuesday and Thursday for an hour. Though the primary focus of our programs is for the kids to have fun, we also hope they develop a good foundation for the sport of table tennis through these programs; good eye-hand coordination, basic skills of table tennis and fondness for the sport.
We provide individual coaching for the kids with advanced skills during regular playing times four times a week.
Guideline for program volunteers
Each child has a different skill level. When we have a child at
the table, we should make a quick individual assessment and set a proper goal for his/her level of achievement for that day.
